On 24 June 2025, MasterPeace Romania organised an online panel discussion titled “Sustainable Style Across the Continents”, bringing together 27 participants from Romania, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and the Netherlands. The public educational event gathered young people, youth workers, educators, civil society representatives, and members of partner organisations to explore sustainable fashion, textile waste, and conscious consumption from local, European, and global perspectives.
The panel opened with an introduction to the topic and an overview of the fashion situation in Romania, highlighting growing textile waste, low separate collection rates, and the influence of fast fashion. Participants were introduced to key concepts such as fast versus slow fashion, as well as practical tools for conscious consumption, including capsule wardrobes, cost per wear, and impact per wear. Discussions also touched on EU and national approaches to textile collection and responsibility, helping participants understand how individual choices connect to wider systems.
Through breakout discussions, participants shared personal experiences with clothing repair, reuse, second-hand shopping, and the challenges of affordability, trends, and convenience. A guest contribution from a sustainability expert from India offered a cross-continental perspective, showcasing reuse-oriented practices, traditional repair methods, and long-term clothing use rooted in everyday culture. This global viewpoint broadened the discussion and demonstrated that sustainable fashion can be both practical and culturally embedded.
Overall, the panel fostered open dialogue, peer learning, and strong engagement. Participants increased their awareness of textile waste challenges, gained confidence in discussing sustainable fashion, and identified concrete actions they can apply in daily life and share within their communities. The exchange strengthened motivation for more responsible consumption and highlighted the value of learning across borders and cultures.
