On 28 January 2025, MasterPeace Netherlands organised an online panel and training session focused on microtrends and sustainability, bringing together young people, Albeda Fashion students, teachers, sustainability coordinators, project partners, and Movers & Shakers. The session created an interactive space to explore how microtrends shape fashion, consumer behaviour, and youth well-being, and to reflect on more sustainable and mindful alternatives.
The panel opened with an introduction and energiser, followed by expert inputs from Jeffrey Vogel, Sustainability Coordinator at Albeda College, and Florentine van der Linden from Amsterdam Fashion Week. Their contributions helped participants better understand what microtrends are, how they spread through social media and influencers, and what their environmental, social, and mental health impacts can be, including pressure to conform and fear of missing out (FOMO). Participants then worked in breakout groups, each focusing on key themes such as sustainability, digital influence, youth agency, and the future of fashion.
During the plenary session, groups shared their reflections and ideas, highlighting concrete ways young people can question, influence, or resist microtrends and promote more conscious consumption. The panel concluded with a presentation of creative artworks, including sustainable hoodies designed by Movers & Shakers, linking discussion directly to youth-led action. Overall, the activity strengthened critical thinking, encouraged cross-sector dialogue, and empowered participants to engage more consciously with fashion and digital culture, while fostering shared visions for a more sustainable future.
