Green Friday in Zabrze: Buy Less, Think More

On 21 November 2025, young people from the European Youth Club in Zabrze organised the Green Friday campaign as an ecological alternative to Black Friday. The action responded to the growing culture of overconsumption and impulsive shopping by encouraging citizens to pause, reflect, and make more conscious choices.

During the campaign, young participants took to the streets of Zabrze city centre, engaging passers-by in conversations about overconsumption, fast fashion, and the environmental impact of unnecessary purchases. They distributed non-invasive electrostatic stickers promoting “100% savings on Black Friday,” highlighting the idea that the best way to save money is often not to buy at all. Through informal discussions, they explained how impulsive shopping contributes to waste, resource depletion, and environmental damage.

A key part of the campaign was introducing the 6Rs of conscious consumption: Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. These simple principles helped residents reflect on their everyday shopping habits and offered practical alternatives to the Black Friday shopping frenzy. The action placed special attention on fast fashion, raising awareness about the global consequences of overproduction and textile waste.

Overall, Green Friday in Zabrze successfully transformed a busy shopping period into a moment of reflection, dialogue, and awareness. By bringing the message directly into public space, young people demonstrated how small actions and everyday choices can contribute to more responsible consumption and a more sustainable lifestyle.
